Riverboat Nenana
Description
- Built in 1933 by the Berg Ship Building Company at Nenana, AK.
-Has a cargo deck, boat deck, Texas deck, and the pilot house.
- Capable of transporting 48 passengers and 300 tons of cargo (2 tons that needed to be kept cool).
- Could push six barges on the Yukon River but only one on the Tanana River
History
S.S. Nenana served the military installations in Alaska during WWII, including the Lend-Lease Project. After the war, the passenger service was put out of service and was sent to Canada. It came back one more time for the Alaska Railroad before returning to freight services in 1954 for the summer season, operated under Yutanan Barge Lines. In 1957, the Nenana sat at the Chena and Tanana Rivers to be used as a museum and hotel until 1965, when Alaskaland (currently named Pioneer Park) dug out a channel from the Chena River and got the Nenana to her new home on display.
