Description
Baltimore & Ohio #545
2-8-0 wheel configuration
Consolidation
Standard gauge
History
Built in 1888 by Andrew J. Cromwell, the Baltimore and Ohio's Supervisor of Motive Power. Consolidation locomotives wouldn't be as fast as some locomotives. But the three-point suspension would increase the traction and
could pull heavy trains up steep grades in mountains. #545 would haul coal in gondolas from the Alleghenies to Baltimore Harbor and would continue to operate until the 1920s. It would be used at displays, such as for Fair of the Iron Horse in 1927. In 1935, #545 would be displayed in an exhibition hall when the roof collapsed from a thunderstorm and caused damage to it. #545 was moved to the Bailey's roundhouse and onto where it is displayed today at the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum. It once again got damaged from this roundhouse's roof collapsing in 2003. This is the oldest and only 2-8-0 consolidation locomotive to be restored and saved.
