Baltimore & Ohio Caboose 2222

I-5
Wood side and steel end walls
Standard gauge
4 axles

History

Built in 1929 by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in Indiana. In 1957, the floors were reinforced with concrete in case the caboose was coupled to an engine pushing. This would prevent the caboose from breaking. When the Chessie System absorbed the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, the caboose was painted yellow in Ohio. It would then be used in West Virginia until 1975. Five years later, the United States Government no longer required cabooses on trains because a new end-of-train device (EOT) would be more practical with trains getting longer and railcars now taller than the cupola. This caboose was donated to the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum and is on display inside the fence today.
