Description

Illinois Central Refrigerated Boxcar 13715

Pacific
Standard gauge

History

Built in 1958 by Pacific Car & Foundry Company for the Merchants Dispatch Transportation & Illinois Central Railroad, even though Merchants Dispatch Transportation itself manufactured the majority of the refrigerated boxcars. Ice was used to keep this refrigerated boxcar cool as it transported perishables. Other cooling methods were developing, making this refrigerated boxcar less useful. So, it was retired and was stored in the Pennsylvania Railroad Yard. It was then donated to the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum, where it is on display today.
