History
Built in 1836 by Ross Winans & George Gillingham at the Mt. Clare Shop. This was the first locomotive with a cab in the United States. The wheel configuration helped with the sharp curves of the tracks. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad had eighteen grasshopper locomotives between 1832 and 1837. The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad started purchasing locomotives that had horizontal boilers instead of vertical ones. Hancock was stripped of the nickname and was numbered 8 when the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad started numbering locomotives in 1850. In 1884, it was renumbered to 3 because it was the third oldest locomotive on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. In 1893, this locomotive was displayed in Illinois for the World's Columbian Exposition as a celebration. It was the only locomotive out of four that survived. The historians made an error and mislabeled this locomotive as the “Thomas Jefferson” during the event. It was restored into to original appearance with the labels #8 and “John Hancock” in 1949 and is now on static display at the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum.
