History

Built in 1950 by H.K. Porter Company in Pennsylvania, and was used to haul coal to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Washington, DC. Coal was fuel for the boiler plants at the time. In 1968, the United States Department of Health acquired #4 when it was no longer needed by St. Elizabeth Hospital as they replaced the coal-based heating system with an oil-based based. A year later, the United States Army 714th Transportation Battalion used #4 at Fort Eustis, Virginia, and renumbered 714. In 1972, the facilities at Fort Eustis were closed, so #714 was discontinued and was sold to the Cass Scenic Railroad until finally retired in 1980. It is now inside the car shop at the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum and renumbered #4.
