Description

Pere Marquette #11

GM EMD
Switcher

History

Built in 1942 by General Motors Electro-Motive Division for the Pere Marquette Railway. The Pere Marquette Railway would serve in Michigan, hauling timber, and it expanded to Illinois, Indiana, New York, and Canada. Switchers like #11 were built to travel short distances, switch in railyards and for industries, and would disassemble trains coming in as well as assemble trains that would need to depart. In 1929, the Pere Marquette Railway was sold to the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway due to financial issues. In 1973, the Baltimore & Ohio, Chesapeake & Ohio, and Western Maryland Railroads merged together and formed the Chessie System Inc. When Chessie System Inc. merged with the Seaboard Air Line Railroad in 1982, they formed Chessie Seaboard, which we know today as CSX Transportation. Pere Marquette #11 is now on display in the fence at the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum.
