History

Built in 1955 by General American Transportation Company for the American Railway Express. At its origin, ice was loaded on top to keep the perishables cool while in transit. These refrigerated boxcars traveled on passenger and mail trains. Years after WWII, business for the railroads, such as mail, perishables, and passenger businesses, slowly decreased as air and road transportation took over. These refrigerated boxcars were sold and used on other railroad companies to transport mail. Today, this refrigerated boxcar is in the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum's yard.
