Jupiter

History

Built in 1876 by Baldwin Locomotive Works in Pennsylvania for the Santa Cruz Railroad, it started as a narrow-gauge locomotive. In 1883, it was converted to standard gauge. It would pull both freight and passenger trains. The Ferrocarril Guatemala Central Railroad purchased this locomotive in 1885. This railroad merged with the Ferrocarrilles Internacionales de Centroamerica in 1921. They nicknamed this locomotive “Jupiter” and operated it up until 1960. Three years later, it went on display at the John F. Kennedy playground in the open air and was donated to the Smithsonian in 1975. The next year, it was displayed at the Arts & Industry Building for the 1876 Exhibition. Today, it is on display at the National Museum of American History in the transportation exhibition.
