Southern Caboose X396

This caboose was built in 1974 by the Gantt Manufacturing Company in South Carolina. A bay window caboose is where the crew would watch the train from an extended wall in the caboose instead of on top in a cupola. These types of cabooses were used when the railcars were too tall and would block the view from a cupola. Caboose X396 was sold to the National Railway Historical Society and was transferred to the excursions operated by the Norfolk Southern Railway in the 1990s. It is now at the North Florida Railway Museum awaiting restoration.
