Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe Car 5954

History

Built in Germany by Peter Behrens in 1924 with four hundred ninety-nine other streetcars and five hundred trailers for the Berliner Strassenbahn, which was formed by many tramway companies. In 1929, the company's name changed to Berliner Verkehrs Aktiengesellschaft. This streetcar was painted cream in 1934. In 1938, the company's name changed to Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe. The 1954 decision to end streetcar service to and from West Berlin was approved in 1967. The same year, Car 5954 was acquired by the Stadtwerke Karlsruhe-Verkehrsbetriebe and served the Federal Garden Show with other streetcars. For the excursion, this streetcar was painted blue and gray with cream scrolls on the lower body. The ceiling had crepe paper flower artwork, and the windows had striped curtains. In 1969, Car 5954 was sold to the National Capital Trolley Museum and was restored to the cream paint scheme. It is on display in the Street Car Hall.
