Third Avenue Car 678
History
Built in 1971 by Third Avenue Railway System itself in the 65th Street shops in New York to serve in New York City. Recycled parts were used on this streetcar. It was suitable to serve in the Bronx area instead of the Presidents' Conference Committee streetcars. In 1948, Bronx Trolley Lines were abandoned, and Car 678 was sold to a tramway in Austria to replace streetcars that were damaged from WWII. Wiener Stadtwerke replaced the trolley poles with warning devices alerting passengers when the doors would open or close, added a wood-slat floor, and installed turn signals. In 1971, this streetcar was sold to the National Capital Trolley Museum and was restored to its Third Avenue Railway System appearance. Today, it is operable and stored in the Streetcar Hall.
