Buffalo Creek & Gauley #14

History

Built in 1918 by the American Locomotive Company in New York, this locomotive was initially equipped with a 0-8-0 wheel configuration. It was later converted to a 2-8-0 wheel configuration when the Kelley's Creek & Northwestern Railroad purchased it and numbered it 1. This railroad hauled coal and was owned by the Valley Camp Coal Company. In 1954, the Buffalo Creek & Gauley Railroad purchased #1 and renumbered it to 14. Paul Hersch in West Virginia purchased #14 from the Buffalo Creek & Gauley Railroad when it retired in 1967. This locomotive was relocated to Pennsylvania in 1975 and was donated to the Wilmington & Western Railroad in Delaware five years later. Today, it is on display at the Gaithersburg Depot.
