Built in 1957 by Electro-motive Division for the Northern Pacific Railway. Production ceased in 1959 in the United States, and Canada ceased production in 1963. The GP9s were replaced by the new FA and FB units. Though the appearance of the FA locomotives was more attractive, GP7s and GP9s were best for switching in railyards. This locomotive also served on the New York & Greenwood Lake Railway and was renumbered to 1268. In 2024, this locomotive made a trip from Pennsylvania to the Inland Northwest Rail Museum for static display.
