This was the first all-metal airliner built by Boeing. The first sixty were built for United Airlines. A competitor at the time, Trans World Airlines, wanted 247s. However, Boeing kept the aircraft and had Douglas design the DC-3. In 1934, the United States Mail Act was established by the United States Government, which prohibited manufacturers from owning airlines. It is on display in the Aviation Pavilion at the Museum of Flight.
